ombreExtensive Definition
Ombre is a card game
played by three players with a deck of 40 cards, having no 8s, 9s,
or 10s. This game was popular during the 18th
century, especially in Spain.
Each player would be dealt 9 cards (representing
the nine muses) while the
rest would be part of a 'stock.' The player to the right of the
dealer commences play and is declared the "ombre" or literally "the
man" and trump is decided by that person.
For an even more bare bones version of the rules,
know that Alexander
Pope made gratuitous references within his mock-heroic,
epic poem, The
Rape of the Lock — which, when considered beyond the
language of his text, becomes a much simpler game than the original
game.
